What is Literary Translation?
Literary translation is the art of translating books, novels, and other creative works in a way that preserves the story’s emotional depth, voice, and flow. It’s not just about converting words — it’s about capturing the tone, rhythm, and feeling behind them. As a self-published author myself, I understand how vital it is to stay true to the original voice while still allowing room for creativity in the new language. That’s what makes literary translation so unique — and so powerful.
What languages do you translate?
I offer professional translation between English and German, in both directions — English to German and German to English. Whether English is your source or target language, just let me know in advance if you’re using UK or US English, so I can adapt the tone and spelling accordingly.
What genres do you accept?
Pretty much anything! While I specialize in Paranormal and Contemporary Romance — genres I also write myself — I’m an avid reader and love working across all kinds of stories. Whether your book is Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Thriller, Horror, or even an autobiography, I’m happy to translate it with care and attention to your voice. How does payment work?
I accept payment via PayPal. All prices are listed in euros (€ EUR) and include PayPal fees. Please note that 20% Austrian VAT is added only if you’re located within the EU and don’t have a valid VAT number.
For Book Translation:
- A 50% advance is required before the agreed start date.
- Once payment is received, I’ll begin the translation and schedule editing.
- The final 50% is invoiced after the full process (translation, editing, and proofing) is complete.
- You’ll receive your translated files after the final payment.
For Other Services:
(Proofing, Promo Material Translation, Formatting)
- No advance payment needed.
- You’ll receive a single invoice for the full amount after completion.
Do you offer rush translations?
If my schedule allows, I’m happy to take on rush translation projects. Just note that this service includes a surcharge for the faster turnaround. Feel free to get in touch to see if I have availability!
What if I change my mind? Can I get a refund of the advance?
The 50% advance is due 7 days before the scheduled start date to reserve your slot. If you decide to cancel 8 days or more before the start date, no worries — just let me know, and I’ll cancel the invoice.
However, once payment has been made, it’s non-refundable, as that spot is reserved for you. If any work (like editing or proofing) has already begun, those services must still be paid in full.
What do you need from me?
For Book Translation:
- Your manuscript as a Microsoft Word document
- Your book cover
- A link to your published book (if available)
- Any additional material to be translated: blurb, front & back matter, cover text, etc.
For Proofing only:
- The Microsoft Word document provided by your editor.
For Promo Material Translation:
- All text to be translated, sent as a Microsoft Word document.
For Formatting:
- All content you want included — such as images, links, front/back matter, etc.
For Audiobook Proofing:
- The audiobook file (MP3).
- The manuscript as a Microsoft Word document.
Why should I hire a freelance translator instead of a translation agency?
Translation agencies are often fast — but speed can come at the cost of quality. Most use neural machine translation (AI) as a base and then have someone quickly review it (if at all). These translators are rarely specialists in book translation or literary translation, which is essential if you want your book to truly resonate — and sell.
I’ve worked with many authors who turned to me after receiving poor-quality translations from agencies. Unfortunately, the issues often become obvious only after early readers leave critical reviews.
As a specialized literary translator and author myself, I bring genre knowledge, publishing experience, and a creative eye to your book. When you work with a freelancer like me, you’re not just hiring a service — you’re building a long-term partnership with someone who cares about your story as much as you do.
Can’t I just use AI to translate my book?
I strongly advise against relying on AI for book translation. While tools like neural machine translation have improved a lot, they still lack one key element: a human brain. There are countless subtleties in language that AI simply can’t grasp. Here are just a few examples:
- Subject clarity: The English “you” can be singular or plural, but German makes that distinction. AI often gets it wrong.

Gender accuracy: English doesn’t mark gender in words like friend, lover, or client — but German does, and AI doesn’t always choose correctly.

Context sensitivity: A phrase like “What’s on your mind?” could have five different translations depending on tone and situation.

Stylistic repetition: AI doesn’t recognize overused phrases and won’t swap them for more elegant synonyms.

Humor and wordplay: Jokes rarely translate directly. A human can rewrite them to fit the new language and audience — AI can’t.
If you care about how your book sounds, feels, and connects with readers in another language, a professional book translator is the only way to go.

I’m afraid my story will get “lost in translation.” Can you keep my author’s voice?
Yes — as long as your writing follows the general style rules of the target language, I absolutely can. I work with the standard guides: the Chicago Manual of Style (US), Oxford Style Guide (UK), and Duden (DE), depending on your chosen language. These aren’t meant to restrict your creativity — they’re here to make sure your writing is clean, consistent, and professional.
That said, as an author myself, I know that rules can be bent for the sake of voice. For example, most style guides advise against using brackets in fiction — but modern novelists often use them to show inner thoughts. That’s fine, as long as it’s intentional and done well.
What doesn’t work is using style as an excuse to break every rule: dialogue punctuation, endless sentence fragments, repetitive phrasing, etc. If a manuscript ignores the basics entirely, then yes — the voice will get lost in translation, because the foundation isn’t solid.
Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with style guides — most authors aren’t. The best way to internalize them? Read in your genre. A lot. When you read more than you write, you naturally absorb tone, rhythm, and structure — which helps me preserve your voice beautifully in translation.
Do you only offer translation for books?
No. While my main focus is on book and literary translation, I also offer general translation services for other types of content. As an author, I bring deep knowledge of storytelling and publishing, but I’m also happy to help with marketing materials, websites, audio/video scripts, and more.

Do you also translate non-fiction books?
Yes, I do! I’m happy to translate non-fiction books from English to German or vice versa. Just send me a link to your published book so I can take a look and make sure we’re a good fit for each other and your project’s needs.
What if I want to switch translators within a book series?
If you’ve already started a series with another translator and would like to switch to working with me, that’s totally possible — but maintaining consistency is key.
Ideally, you’ll provide the termbase your previous translator used (a glossary of names, phrases, and stylistic choices). If that’s not available, I’ll need the already translated books to do a read-through and get familiar with the style and terminology.
In that case, a small fee may apply depending on the length and number of books. Just contact me, and I’ll be happy to take a look and provide a fair rate.
How long does it take you to translate?
It depends on the word count, genre, and the overall quality of the manuscript. For a polished 100K-word novel, the initial translation draft typically takes 6–8 weeks.
During the process, I’ll reach out if anything is unclear — clear communication is key to preserving your voice. The cleaner and more professionally edited your manuscript is, the faster and smoother the translation will go.
Once the draft is done, it moves on to editing. I work with trusted editors, and their timelines vary: some can complete a 100K novel in about 2 weeks, others may need up to 2 months depending on availability.
After editing, I take about 2 additional weeks for reviewing changes and doing a final proofread before delivery.
How does your translation process work?
It’s simple and straightforward. First, send me an email with your project details. You’re welcome to include a sample (up to 500 words) if you’d like a preview of my work.
To help me assess the quality and writing style, I ask that you also send at least two different chapters from your book for a read-through. This helps me get a feel for your voice.
If we move forward, I’ll send you two documents to sign: a project agreement and a Terms of Service Agreement. Once those are signed, the advance payment is complete, and I’ve received all required files (as Microsoft Word documents), I’ll begin the translation on the agreed start date.
I need to update my original manuscript. Will you also update the translation?
Absolutely! Just reach out and let me know what’s changed.
If it’s just a few words, sentences, or small updates to your front or back matter, I’ll make those changes free of charge.
For larger edits — like full paragraphs or chapters — a small fee may apply. In that case, I’ll take a look and provide a fair quote.
Do I have to share my royalties with you?
No — never. Once the translated manuscript is delivered, all decisions about publishing, marketing, and distribution are completely yours.
You pay a one-time fee for my translation services, and you keep 100% of the royalties from your book sales. No ongoing payments, no strings attached — just full creative and financial control.
Who holds the copyright of the translated work?
As the translator, I’m considered the copyright holder of the translated version — since I’m the creative author of the new text.
This doesn’t affect your publishing rights. It simply means that once the translation is finalized, no changes can be made to the translated manuscript without my approval. You’ll also need to credit me as the translator in the copyright section of your book (which I usually include myself) and link my name when uploading the book to your publishing platforms.
Everything else — publishing, marketing, pricing, distribution — stays fully in your control as the author.
Why don’t you handle the editing yourself?
I work with professional editors for the editing phase — and there’s a reason for that. As an author myself, I believe it’s essential that someone other than the translator takes on the editing task. A fresh set of eyes can catch things the original translator might miss, even in their native language.
Editing is a mandatory part of the translation process, and I’ll manage the entire workflow — including communication with the editor — so you receive a polished, ready-to-publish manuscript.
If you already have a translated and edited version of your book and just need a final proofread, I’m happy to help make sure everything is clean and publication-ready.
Do you offer sample translations?
Yes, absolutely! You can send me a sample of up to 500 words (Microsoft Word document), and I’ll be happy to translate it for you — so you can get a feel for my style, tone, and translation approach before committing.
You might be thinking, “But I don’t speak the language, so how will I know if it’s any good?” That’s a valid concern! In that case, I recommend asking a native speaker or bilingual friend to review the sample — just to give you extra peace of mind.
Will you keep my manuscript confidential?
Absolutely. I treat every manuscript with complete confidentiality and respect. Your work will never be shared, reused, or discussed without your permission.
The only exception is the professional editor I’m working with for your translation. In that case, I may share portions of the manuscript only when necessary, such as when an editor needs to check phrasing or context to ensure quality. This is purely for quality control, and your manuscript will never be passed on to anyone not directly involved in the process.
